Google’s Search growth is slowing. Its Cloud just doubled.

Alphabet’s third quarter, read from its own filed numbers: Search up 12% and slowing, Cloud up 103% and speeding up. Here’s what changed, and what it means for how a business is found and where its AI runs.

What did Google report?

Alphabet’s quarter to September 30, 2026 brought in $127.6B, up 25% on a year before. Search and its related products made $63.4B, up 12%. Google Cloud made $30.7B, up 103%: it more than doubled in a year.1

Is Search shrinking?

No. It is still growing, just more slowly each quarter: 19% in the first quarter of 2026, 17% in the second, 12% in the third. From the second quarter to the third, Search revenue barely moved, $63.3B to $63.4B.1,2,3

Searching itself is not slowing down. Google’s chief executive says the number of searches grew faster than at any time in five years, and called out commercial searches in particular.1 More searches, with slower growth in the money they bring in, is the shape to notice. Our reading is that more of each search is being answered on the results page itself, by AI, before anyone clicks an ad or a link. Google’s release doesn’t say that, and one quarter can’t prove it, so treat it as our view, not a finding.

Why did Cloud double?

Because companies are buying AI computing. Google puts the growth down to “huge demand for our AI infrastructure and AI solutions”, and strong demand for its own TPU chips.1 Growth sped up every quarter this year, 63% then 82% then 103%.

It is also making real money now. Cloud’s operating income was $11.1B on $30.7B of revenue, a margin of 36%, against 24% a year earlier.

How has Google’s business changed?

Search now brings in less than half of Alphabet’s revenue: 49.7% this quarter, down from 55.3% a year ago. Cloud’s share rose from 14.8% to 24.1%.

And Google is spending to keep up. It put $51.4B into property and equipment in the quarter, 2.1 times a year earlier, and more than Cloud took in.1

What does it mean for how a business is found?

Search isn’t going away. People are searching more than ever. What’s changing is where the answer comes from: more often it is written by AI on the results page, from the pages it can read, rather than chosen by a click.

So the work is the same work, done more carefully: pages an assistant can read, that answer the question in their first lines, that say plainly who you are and where. In our own count of 316,711 sites, almost none answer right under the question.4 You can see where yours stands with the free AI visibility check.

What does it mean for where your AI runs?

AI is turning into infrastructure that companies buy, the way they buy storage and servers. Renting it from a cloud is the quickest start, and for a lot of work it’s the right one.

But demand is running ahead of supply, and the bill grows with every question your people ask. For work that runs all day, or data that can’t leave the building, owning the hardware can cost less over time and keeps the records where they already are. Which way fits depends on your data, your rules and how many people will use it. The private AI readiness check gives a first answer in six questions.

What we’re watching next

Three things. Whether Search growth keeps slowing or steadies in the fourth quarter. Whether Cloud holds a margin above 30% while it spends this much to grow. And how much of Google’s capital spending goes into its own chips, which shapes what AI costs for everyone who rents it.

One quarter is a data point, not a trend. We’ll come back to these numbers when Alphabet reports again.

How we read the numbers

Every figure is from Alphabet’s quarterly earnings releases, filed with the SEC as exhibit 99.1 to Form 8-K, for the first three quarters of 2026; each release also gives the same quarter of 2025. Search means the line Alphabet reports as Google Search & other. Cloud profit is Google Cloud’s operating income, and capital spending is purchases of property and equipment. Growth is against the same quarter a year before. The view on what the numbers mean is ours.
